Waste Heat Utilised at the Energy Center

A new type of energy solution that utilizes waste heat, an energy center, has been built at Ensto’s Porvoo site. The system cools the production facilities while capturing the recovered heat and directing it back to the energy center, from where it is supplied to the district heating network operated by Porvoon Energia, a Finnish Distribution System Operator (DSO). The recovered waste heat is utilized in the district heating network and used to heat the city of Porvoo.

At the same time, we at Ensto take care of cooling needs efficiently and without burdening the environment. The project supports our sustainable development goals excellently: improves well-being at work by investing in the work environment and reduces the carbon footprint.

Ensto and Porvoon Energia have implemented the energy center in cooperation with Iotoi, an expert company whose innovative technology underpins the joint project. Iotoi also acted as the contractor for the site.

The energy project is a unique joint effort on the scale of Porvoo and the whole of Finland, and it serves as a great example of how working together can develop the district heating network and promote the green transition.

Which Energy Center?

A new cooling and energy collection system for production facilities is currently being built at Ensto's Porvoo property, which will allow the heat generated in the cooling process of the energy center and the surplus heat generated from the factory's machines to the premises to be converted into heating energy in an energy-efficient manner through a heat recovery system connected to the Porvoo district heating network.

The system is based on Iotoi’s technology, which uses district heating return water to recover the large, previously unused waste-heat potential from Ensto’s industrial operations. The site’s waste-heat output is estimated at around 14,000 MWh per year, of which about two-thirds can be supplied to Porvoon Energia’s district heating network.

New cooling lines and fans will be installed in Ensto's production hall to ensure process demand and improve working conditions. The energy centre will be built in the adjacent hall, where industrial heat pumps will produce cooling.

The waste heat from the cooling process is recovered and used for district heating production – in this way, previously wasted energy can be utilised.

The three-pipe connection enables the supply of low-temperature district heating, e.g. to Porvoo Central School in an energy-efficient way through the return pipe.

The project brings Porvoo’s key stakeholders together to create something new and unique for the benefit of the environment and the entire city of Porvoo.

The project combines the environmental, social and sustainable development goals of Ensto and Porvoon Energia, which operate in Porvoo. The implementation will reduce combustion-based district heating production and carbon dioxide emissions. The three-pipe connection makes it possible to utilise waste heat in district heating without unnecessary additional heating with electricity.

Porvoon Energia has received approximately EUR 2.1 million in funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for the implementation of the project, supported by the Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland (RRF).

The development of the project concept, the implementation of the project and the main contracting are the responsibility of Iotoi Oy from Porvoo.

The heat pumps are manufactured by Energy Machines Oy from Porvoo, which operates in the international market.

Innovative Three-Pipe System for More Energy Efficiency in District Heating

Iotoi's patented PIP3 three-pipe solution enables the use of the district heating return pipe for both heating properties and distributing waste heat in district heating networks.

This is a significant improvement, as in the traditional operating model the return pipe has not been utilized for waste heat recovery or its distribution, and using the supply pipe has, in most cases, not been economically viable. Thanks to the PIP3 solution, energy companies can enhance the use of waste heat in their district heating networks without major modifications to the existing infrastructure.

The project being completed at Ensto’s production facility in Porvoo is the first major district heating installation to feed waste heat into the return pipe in a network that also includes a large consumer utilizing return heat (Keskuskoulu / Central School).
